Mission of the Food and Veterinary Agency

The Food and Veterinary Agency of Kosovo (FVA) is the highest Food and Veterinary Authority responsible for protecting human life and health by ensuring a high level of food safety, including animal feed, animal health, plant health, animal welfare and the quality of food of plant and animal origin.
The Government of Kosovo has delegated the FVA as the authority for carrying out inspections in the field of safety, hygiene, traceability and labelling of food for humans and food for animals in the areas of processing, packaging, distribution, wholesale and retail in accordance with national legislation and harmonised EU legislation. In social terms, the creation of the FVA gives Kosovar citizens the right to consume products that are as safe as citizens of European Union member states.

The food safety system aims to establish the foundations for ensuring a high level of protection of human health and consumer interests. This system is implemented at all stages of primary production and at all stages of treatment, processing and distribution of human and animal food.

In the field of veterinary medicine, the FVA is responsible for ensuring monitoring and control of infectious animal diseases, zoonoses and animal welfare, preventing disease outbreaks and eliminating them, applying all necessary control measures and diagnostic research to prevent the introduction of infectious diseases and zoonoses into the territory of Kosovo.

In the field of phytosanitary, the FVA is responsible for ensuring an effective system of controls of organisms harmful to plants and plant products. in accordance with EU phytosanitary standards. Undertaking phytosanitary measures aimed at preventing the entry, concentration and spread of diseases and quarantine pests of plants and plant products and other objects in the Republic of Kosovo

The Phytosanitary Sector is responsible for implementing the legal framework at national and EU level for phytosanitary fields – plant health, plant protection products, food safety for products of plant origin, seeds and planting material, and plant variety rights.

The FVA as a state authority of the Republic of Kosovo implements the legislation in force regarding the protection of public health, food safety, as well as animal health and welfare. This role, the FVA performs by implementing government policies with the implementation of capital projects in these areas by organizing official controls at the borders and within the territory of the Republic of Kosovo
